While most people think you can convert cat age to human age with a simple factor of 7, often used for dogs, the calculation for cat age is actually more complex than that and has been debated and researched for several years. Our cat age calculator is roughly based around research and information by Tracie Hotchner, found in her popular book, the Cat Bible.

In their first few years of life, cats mature much quicker than humans and much quicker than in their later years of life. For this reason, the cat’s initial first year in life is equivalent to roughly 15 human years and it’s second year in life is equivalent to roughly 10 human years. Each additional year of the cat’s life can be estimated at 4 to 4 ½ human years. Our calculator uses the figure 4 1/4 years for each year of the cat’s life past the first initial two.

For example, let’s say you are calculating cat years to human years for a cat that is four years old. The first two years would be equivalent to 25 human years (15 years + 10 years). The next 2 years would be estimated at 8.5 years (4.25 years + 4.25 years). Add up the total and your cat of four years old would be 33 ½ in human years.
