Women have used a vast array of ways to support, minimize or emphasize their breasts throughout history. One of the most prominent ways was the corset, which eventually led to the development of the “brassiere.” The “brassiere,” shortened to “bra” by the 1930’s, replaced the corset in the late 19th century as a more functional and practical way to support the breasts.
Finding the perfect bra can be challenging and time consuming, but the benefits to wearing a correctly fitted bra are indisputable. Larger busted women wearing an improperly fitted bra, are at risk of shoulder, neck and lower back pain as well as headaches and even cervical spine problems. Without the proper support, breasts can begin to sag or become misshapen due to an underwire cutting into the breast tissue. Wearing a properly fitted bra will greatly reduce these risks, as well as improve the appearance of the breasts and body overall. Women may find it embarrassing to get fitted for a new bra at a store, or may simply not have the time; using this bra size calculator can help you get started in finding a comfortable and correctly fitted bra. Follow the instructions below to get accurate measurements of your bust and below, then plug those figures into the calculator to find the best bra size for you.
To use the bra size calculator start by measuring around your rib cage under your breasts. Take this measurement without wearing a bra as the band of the bra will be in the way. Use a soft measuring tape, such as one used for sewing, and wrap it around yourself snugly. Plug this measurement into the box labeled “Below.” To measure your bust, take the measuring tape across your nipples/where your breasts are fullest, and around your body. This measurement should be taken wearing your best fitted bra (not a sports or padded bra) as you will need the support from a bra to get the most accurate measurement of your breasts fullness. The measuring tape should be fairly loose. This measurement should then be plugged into the the box labeled “Bust.” Then click “Calculate;” this measurement will be approximately the best fitted band and cup size for you. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule.
